When the weather is cold, it’s natural for us to crave comfort foods. Below are a few of my favorite winter comfort foods that keep you warm and cozy all day long.
For breakfast, start those chilly days with a hot bowl of steel cut oats or grits and chile.
For a hearty meal, what’s more comforting than a hot, delicious dish that fills the home with a wonderful aroma and the body with warmth and satisfaction. For me, a bowl of bean, a plate of enchiladas, a soup or stew or something baked is so inviting and warming.
To end the day, treat your body and soul with the flavors and aromas a hot, apple dessert fresh from the oven.
I hope you enjoy this selection of winter comfort foods. Be sure to check our some similar dishes provided in the gallery below each recipe.
Here are a couple of vegetarian dishes (along with the Swiss Chard Pie above)n that we also enjoy:
Coconut-Lime Sunshine Soup with Wild Rice and Mushroom from Inspired Edibles.
Mushroom Polenta Casserole with Cheese and Sage from Where is My Spoon.
It has been more chilly than usual for us here and I want to grab a bowl of stew to keep me warm and comforted π
Thanks Taruna! It’s hard not to make comfort food when it’s so chilly!
Hello dear MJ ! The collection is absolutely printed; we are in northern Europe at the moment, surrounded with cold weather and we shall enjoy your suggestions, starting now !!! Thank you !
Thank you Davorka! I bet it is chilly up there. I’m in the southwestern US and it’s plenty chilly enough here. Enjoy!
Our mild day has turned into a bitterly cold evening! I’d like to start at the bottom with the two fabulous apple desserts and work my way up!
So you are like me…let’s start with dessert. π Thanks!
Perfect timing! Warm, comforting meals are my favorite part of winter and this is a delicious line-up!
Thanks Judy!
So many options… where does one start. Think we might start with Posole and work my way down. Great pin! Hey how did you make your photo collection on this page? Looks really nice.
Thanks Bobbi!!! Any type of posole is comfort food in this house. The photo collection was made in Photoshop. I created a rectangle with the title banner then opened the photos I wanted in the collection. Using the select “hand” I dragged each photo onto the rectangle, resized and positioned.
So many comforts to pick from, how does one choose!! My love of bean dishes has grown since we returned to NM. However the Grits and Green Chile, NM Shepherds Pie and Caramel Apple Pie are very appealing especially this time of year.
Thanks Jan! I know what you mean. I think we all have a huge list of comfort foods and choosing it not easy. π If course a pot of beans is always a great choice.
MJ, this is a truly warming winter recipe lineup. I must say, I can’t wait to try your Shepherdβs Pie, New Mexico Style. I’ve put it on my memu for next Friday.
Thanks Ron! The Shepherd’s Pie is a winner! Sometimes I make it with sweet potatoes. YUM!
MJ, your New Mexico Shephard’s pie dish was great! We made it with sweet potatoes and added black beans to the meat mixture. We didn’t have a red chile sauce so I used chipotle paste and a bit of passata, it worked just fine. We will be repeating this one. I also posted an image on my IG @loatinapot account. It was great to have a taste of the Southwest US here in Scandinavia.
Thanks so much Ron! I am thrilled that you made the Shepherd’s Pie. It’s really good with sweet potatoes isn’t it? I make a vegetarian version in which I leave the meat out replace with 2 cups of black beans, so we are definitely on the same plate. π I’ll go check out your picture now. How exciting! Thanks!
What an awesome lineup! I’ll take a bowl of that Grits and Green Chile please! π Happy New Year MJ>
Thanks Lea Ann! You nailed it on the Grits and Green Chile. We have that at least twice a week.
An awesome collection of winter comfort foods, MJ. I NEED all of them in my life :-))
Thanks Angie! We all need some great comfort food in our lives nowadays π
Comfort is where it’s at. I literally freeze when sitting at my computer because the house is North facing and the thermostat is in the room on the South! So any of these dishes would give me comfort! But I haveto admit, I am always partial to chicken pot pie!
thanks Abbe! My computer used to be in the north room as well, but a few years ago we moved it to the middle of the house and my chair is right next to a heater vent. It’s wonderful! I know what you mean about chicken pot pie and my sis makes a great one!
Yes, it’s that time of year, isn’t it? Time to batten down the hatches and steam up the windows with something bubbling away on the stove, or the intoxicating smell of dinner baking in the oven. Mmmm! Thanks, MJ, for the inspiration.
Thank you Sharon! This time of year, I just can’t get enough comfort food. π Thanks for commenting!
Lotta excellent choices here! It’s probably going to snow this weekend — we need all the comfort we can get. π
thanks John! You guys are getting quite a bit of snow this year. We’ve had a little more than usual, but not much. It’s still cold though. π
So many warm and tasty dishes. Thank you.
Thanks A_B!
Love the chile and grits recipe, the chicken pot pie recipe, the caramel apple pie recipe . . . well, just all of them MJ! Definitely will warm us up!!! I’ve missed your posts since your last recipe! Happiest of new years to you! It’s cold here too, believe it or not!
Thanks Darlin! I hope you had a wonderful holiday as well. Ours was quiet and relaxing – just what the doctor ordered. π
