Bloody Mary

Happy New Year 2012!!!!!!

I hope that everyone is having a wonderful weekend as we move into 2012. We’re bringing in the new year with my Bloody Mary which is a pretty traditional holiday drink for us. I am the “official” Bloody Mary maker in my family, so I’ve decided to share my simple recipe with all of you. It’s about as basic as you can get, but oh so good!

Bloody Mary Recipe
Prep

My traditional Bloody Mary made with V8, vodka, and three other simple ingredients. Quite refreshing, spicy, and will have you begging for another.

Course: Beverage
Keyword: cocktail
Yields: 1 drink
Ingredients
  • ice
  • 1 jigger (1.5 ounce) vodka
  • 2 to 3 dashes of Tabasco sauce
  • 4 to 5 drops of Worcestershire Sauce
  • Dash of celery seed
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup V8 juice
  • 1 large wedge of lime
  • stalks of celery for garnish optional
Instructions
  1. Fill your glass halfway with ice.  I usually use an old-fashion type glass.
  2. To the glass add the vodka, Tabasco sauce, Worcestershire sauce and V8. Stir.

  3. Squeeze the lime over the top and give the drink a gentle swirl with a stirring stick or stalk of celery. Drop the lime into the drink and add a stalk of celery if you'd like.

Kitchen Notes

I told you it was simple.  I know I cheat with the V8 juice, but psychologically I think it’s better for me than Bloody Mary Mix and I like the texture and taste of the drink better with V8.  How much V8 you use depends on how strong you want the drink.

For a spicier drink, add more Tabasco – of course.

Be careful with the Worcestershire sauce.  Too much can really kill the drink.  I find 4 to 5 drops to be perfect.

See y’all in 2012!

  1. My hubby is a Bloody Mary fan, but he always makes it with spicy Clamato and I can’t stand clamato therefore I never had a Bloody Mary. Next time I will try it with V8.

  2. Thanks for introducing me to your site. I thought I’d check out this specific post because I read that preserved lemons were excellent in a bloody mary. I haven’t made on in ages, but it’s a great reminder.

    • I’ve never heard of preserved lemons in a Bloody Mary – until now. I will definitely be testing that out. I have a jar of lemons in the fridge all ready to go. Thanks for stopping by! I’ll be stopping by your site again soon!

  3. Bloody Mary’s are one of my favorite drinks! I totally agree with the use of Worcestershire sauce or sometimes I use steak sauce (gives it a wonderful flavor). I’ll admit I tend to use a tad bit more vodka in mine lol.

If you ever happen to see a mix called Zing-Zang that’s among my top favorites for pre-made Bloody Mary mixes.

  4. Oh, I wish I could have one…-

  10. I am a big fan of Bloody Mary. It is not only an excellent drink, but also, if made with a tiny amount of vodka, a great hangover cure! I love the way you served it in wide glasses! Just the way I prefer it 🙂
    Happy New Year!

  11. This Bloody Mary looks like a great way to celebrate!

  12. Happy New Year MJ! Okay, don’t be shocked, but I didn’t know what is in bloody mary… I’m serious! I’m not much of a drinker (occasional wine), so I’m really bad at alcohol names. I heard of it but didn’t know it has tabasco and Worcestershire Sauce in the drink! Surprised! I look forward to your new posts in 2012, MJ!

  13. Happy 2012!!! Perfect way to start the new year!! I have a linky party going right now and wanted to invite you to join! I’ll also start my next giveaway tomorrow!!! Hope to have you visit again soon!

  17. I love a Bloody Mary any time of day, all year! Like chili, I don’t think I’ve met a version I don’t like, although I do like Clamato juice and a couple hits of Tabasco — or sriracha, if I’m feeling really zippy!

  18. Cheers! happy new year =)

  19. Happy New Year! Love your bloody Mary!

  20. Happy New Year to you and your family! Wishing you all the best!

  26. Ah! MJ! Now this is what I’m talking about! You can be my official bloody mary maker if you want! This is the BEST drink on New Year’s Day! I’m so glad I’ve discovered your wonderful blog and I look forward to seeing what amazing things you will do in the coming year. May it be a happy and healthy one for you and your family! : )

  27. Oooooh! We had Bloodies this morning too! Bloody Moskowitz recipe from “Vegan Brunch”. Between that and the Hoppin’ John it looks like we are enjoying a lot of the same great foods today!

  28. How festive! I don’t drink vodka but I love all of the elements in this Bloody Mary and would certainly savour a virgin rendition of your recipe…. yum! (love that you are the official BM maker in the family :)). All the best to you in 2012 MJ!

  29. Happy New Year! All the best for 2012!! I can’t wait to keep sharing recipes through the new year. Your recipes and pictures always inspire me. 🙂 I love spiced up V8… sounds like a delicious drink. Hope you enjoyed your black eyed peas. 🙂

  30. Can’t beat a good bloody mary 😀 I’ve never heard of “V8” or bloody mary mix actually… I normally use just plain tomato juice. Is it very different to “V8”?

    • Happy New Years Charles! V8 is a tomato based vegetable juice, not quite as tomato tasting as plain tomato juice, which I’m sure works great!

  31. This looks great, perfect for my Sunday afternoon football game too. Happy New Years!

  32. Happy New Year!! Sounds just like my recipe except, I add a dash of garlic salt and use lemon instead of lime. I like the V8 too. It adds elegance to the drink. I will be drinking a Macho Mary about 10 am at Santa Anita racetrack’s Frontrunner restaurant today. Even though we are $2 betters the food is very good and the atmosphere is exelerating! Fun way to start the year, and who knows, we might actually win something this year. Much love to you and Bob.

  33. Perfect drink for the celebrations! Happy Blessed New Year to you and your family!

  34. A great drink for New Year’s brunch. Happy New Year!

  35. Can you believe I have never had a Bloody Mary? I am craving one now! Happy New Year!
